From Jam-Game to Steam

First of all, I'd like to give a huge thanks to the 10mg crew for inviting me to participate in the first Collection! I really don't think I would have brought Stroke to Steam were it not for the opportunity and support they gave me.

In no particular order, here are the things I changed from the original game-jam project;

  • New Beginning: I completely altered the beginning of the game to add a scene with the family arriving at the hospital. This really helped cut down on some clunky expository dialogue by establishing the connection between family members naturally.
  • Dialogue Revision: The original dialogue for Stroke was written in 3 hours for a game jam. I re-touched every conversation and had the help of my partner to actually do some proper editing on the dialogue. Some conversations have been rewritten, and I actually changed what I consider to be the "core message" of the game.
  • Added motion: In the original game, only a single character followed a motion path. I was able to add a few more scripted motion events to the game which I think helps bring certain scenes to life.

  • Decoration: I was able to add a lot more decorative elements to the hospital. Sure, it's just set dressing, but I think the original release was a little too bare-bones.
  • Controller Support: For those that prefer to play with a controller, I wanted to make sure the option was included, and even if you have a controller plugged in, the game won't ignore keyboard inputs.
  • Pause Menu: You can now pause the game to view controls at any time.
  • Actual Depth: I made characters properly change their depth based on their position so they can actually walk in front of / behind things in the scenery; it's a really subtle change that you might not notice, but now you don't stand on character's faces anymore.

There are a few other small tweaks, but that's it for the major changes. I should also mention that I have no intention of taking down the HTML5 version of the game for anyone who wants to play the original jam game. Maybe you want to compare the versions yourself? For anyone who did play the original game, thank you for your feedback! It was really encouraging to see how many people connected with the emotional experience that I created. I hope I can create many more experiences (perhaps less emotionally intense ones) that you'll enjoy! If you'd like to support Stroke, you can get it here on Itchio, or on Steam, and of course, as part of the 10mg: Collection, where you can get 9 other unique experiences!
